Every year, the Faculty of Medicine recognizes exceptional faculty members who have made significant contributions in the areas of education, research and/or service.
Congratulations to Dr. Annie Ciernia for receiving a 2024 Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Achievement Award for Advancement of Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness!
This award recognizes outstanding contributions in the area of equity, diversity and inclusion through research, teaching or service. As the chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for the past 4 years, Dr. Ciernia is dedicated to promoting a more positive environment where each individual is empowered to achieve their full potential.
- Equity is the recognition that each person is different and therefore allocating the unique set of resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
- Diversity is the recognition, value and celebration of the uniqueness of each individual.
- Inclusion is forming an environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully.
Some of the initiatives the committee has been involved with include the Worklearn program aimed at students from under-represented groups, the Mentorship program, and the Astell award, which recognizes outstanding commitment to EDI activities.
